Archaeoacoustics: Sound, Hearing, and Experience in Archaeology
This collection contains the abstracts of the papers presented in the session entitled "Archaeoacoustics: Sound, Hearing, and Experience in Archaeology" at the 86th annual meeting of the Society for American Archaeology. Sound has always been an omnipresent component of human experience, and recent trends in archaeological inquiry seek to explore the importance of acoustics, instruments, and what was heard in the past. More than a mere channel of communication, sounds, performances, and music...
Archaeoethnobotany and Household Contexts
This session is broadly focused on archaeoethnobotanical remains associated with household contexts, including both microbotanical and macrobotanical datasets. The session also includes ethnographic work as a means of adding perspective to ethnobotanical research. Presenters discuss the actions and behaviors that led to the deposition of particular remains, and/or what these remains indicate about the state of the ancient environment and past subsistence strategies. Secondarily, as this session...

Archaeological Analysis Using Binford’s Environmental and Ethnographic Frames of Reference
Binford (2001) constructed environmental and ethnographic data sets specifically for archaeologists to use as tools to leverage learning about the past. While researchers from several other fields ranging from cross-cultural analysis and epidemiology to macroecology have taken advantage of these data, relatively few archaeologists have pursued the kinds of learning strategies Binford imagined. The posters in this session showcase some of the archaeological work that is being done using Binford’s...
Archaeological and Historical Survey, Fort Lee (FL1985.001)

Archaeological Approaches to Subjectification
This symposium explores archaeological approaches to subjectification: the practices whereby people recognize authority and recognize themselves as subjects to authority. Archaeology can offer a novel perspective on subjectification because it is uniquely positioned to document the places and things (and their attendant practices) that, over time, manifest claims to identity, underline social boundaries, or undermine a political regime's claim to authority. But even though places and things are...

Archaeological Epistemology in the Digital Age
Digital technologies are becoming integral to archaeological practice, from research to pedagogy and public outreach. In the past decade, many archaeologists have reflected on how these technologies impact their work in the field and in the classroom, but they largely focus on how they developed, implemented, or improved digital tools or techniques designed to organize, analyze, and disseminate data. Yet as digital technologies become increasingly essential to how archaeologists investigate the...
